A new children’s book—”Hattie The Hair Chemist”—is out now and the author knows a thing or two about hair and hair chemistry. Her name is India Butts—and by day, she’s an R&D quality manager at Bronner Brothers, the venerable Atlanta, GA-based haircare company.

At night, Butts wrote a tale to show children that that life has its ups and downs, but you can deal with them better if you believe in your dreams and can handle challenging situations.

In the story, a young beautiful girl named Hattie finds that nothing seems to work on her gorgeous, thick hair. She sets out to develop a solution that works for her hair, creating what just might be the best hair product ever—with the help of her family and friends.

“I wanted a creative way to reach the youth and educate them on hair care development within the cosmetic chemistry industry,” Butts told Happi in an interview after her book signing event held in July at Douglasville Books in Douglasville, GA.

Hattie’s story is both personal and professional for the author.

“Growing up with textured hair, I never knew how to tame my curls,” she shared. “Within the past 10 years I have mastered my hair type.”

Hattie’s perseverance is Butts’ favorite part of the story.

“Hattie does not give up….She did what it takes to develop the best hair product yet,” she said.

“Many times in life, people have ideas and don't know how to pursue them. I wanted to send a message to everyone that they should have a never-give-up attitude just like Hattie,” Butts added.

The book is out now, but this may not be the end of Hattie’s journey.

“Hattie's never give up attitude will take her on many adventures! Stay tuned for more books,” said Butts.

Hattie’s search for a solution resembles many indie brand founder stories and the story offers a great message for children. It may easily become a favorite for bedtime—and maybe it will inspire future cosmetic chemists, too.
